What a wonderful afternoon we had planting the $2000 worth of plants that Warner’s Nursery have very kindly given to our school when we received the Victorian Schools Garden Award Grant earlier in the year.  We were thrilled to see such a beautiful variety of ground covers, shrubs and some established trees.  Our 90 grade 5 students all had the opportunity to plant a plant each within the new Outdoor Common Room garden space.  With the assistance of Ian, Andrew and Bonnie from Warner’s, the plants were placed and the planting began.  Thank you to Warner’s for supplying us with such beautiful plants!  They look amazing within the garden.  Thank you to Andy, Nicole and Ruby Coupar for assisting with planting.  Thank you to the parents, teachers and staff who also assisted the students to plant the garden.  It looks amazing!  We can’t wait until all the other items are installed including: giant marble run, Jenga, dominoes, blackboard, tee pees, mindfulness spaces and seats.  It is going to be a wonderful transformation of what was a very plain area.

On Thursday 15th November Daisy and Joshua our school captains, Leyla, Ruby and Tyler our Helmeted Honeyeater ambassadors, Thiseni, Tess, Jensen and Felix our garden club members along with Mrs. McCrum and Nicole, a parent helper,  attended the Victorian Schools Garden Awards at the Royal Botanical Gardens Melbourne.  We enjoyed participating in a smoking ceremony welcoming us to the gardens and then the award presentations started.  Our school won a regional garden award which we were very excited about.  Towards the end of the ceremony, we were announced as a state award winner and had to stand out the front with two other schools.  They then announced the top winning school in Victoria.  WE WON the Kevin Heinze Perpetual Development award for our outstanding gardens.  We were thrilled to win this award from all of the government, independent and catholic schools across Victoria.  Our students were wonderful ambassadors for our school.  We received three award certificates and the perpetual plaque which we get to display proudly at our school for the next year. We received vouchers totaling $3350 to put towards future garden developments. What an amazing achievement!

Thank you to everyone who has assisted over the past 4 1/2 years with our garden projects.  We have amazing and beautiful garden spaces for our students and community to enjoy including our Sensory Garden, Community Garden, Memorial Garden and our new development – Our Outdoor Common Room!  We are all very proud for receiving such a prestigious award and thank you to the Victorian Schools Garden Awards, judges, sponsors, parents, teachers, students and our community for supporting our garden projects.

This week we received wonderful news that our school is the winner of a regional award from the Victorian School Garden Awards.  We entered two award categories for the Sensory Garden – “Most Engaging Garden for Play” and “Most Engaging Student Garden for Learning”.  This is a fantastic recognition for our beautiful Sensory Garden and our school.  Thanks must be extended to Andy Coupar, a dad at our school for all his hard work in building the garden, Mr. Kelly who assisted myself with a submission for the award and to our community who have supported the project in many different ways to create the beautiful space. We look forward to the awards ceremony which will be held in the Royal Botanical Gardens, Melbourne in November.

Our grade 5 students have been very busy planning, drawing and designing our new outdoor common room garden space which will be built between the grade 5 classrooms and the new grade 4 double portable.  The students have some amazing ideas including seating, mindfulness areas, reading corners, games, chalkboard, marble run, vertical gardens and working spaces for learning.  We wish to thank Warner’s nursery for their garden grant which will assist us with the required plants for the new space.  Warner’s are currently working with Mrs. McCrum to finalise the project design and then it will begin! Warner’s are a wholesale nursery but plants can be purchased from retail outlets.  Please view Warner’s web address for further information:  https://warners.com.au/index.html

The students will be involved in planting and building different parts of the new space. These are some of the fantastic designs for the new space!

Our New Sensory Garden has been built over 18 months and was landscaped by Andy Coupar from Eskape landscapes who is also a Dad at our school. Our New Sensory Garden was officially opened on Friday 15th December by councillor Wayne Smith, representing the City of Casey.  The evening featured performances and Christmas songs from each grade level and families enjoyed a picnic on the oval. The garden provides a natural environment with indigenous plants, a bridge, jetty, water feature, musical instruments including xylophone, chimes and drums, chess board, archway, Helmeted Honeyeater garden, outdoor classroom and a windmill.  Each grade made a “Pot Creation” to place into the garden and these were judged my Mandy Munro from the City of Casey.  The pot creations were amazing and bring an array of colour and interest to the garden. Prizes for the winning pots were donated by Bunnings, Fountain Gate.   The garden is a beautiful addition to our school grounds and a wonderful space for all to enjoy. Thank you to all our families and community who have assisted and donated items.  We look forward to enjoying the garden for many years to come!

On Friday 16th December we enjoyed a lovely evening celebration with our whole school.  The choir sang, grades performed, there was an art show with amazing works, games to play and the fantastic scarecrows in the Community Garden.  David Westlake from the City of Casey was our guest judge and was amazed at the range of scarecrows made from recycled materials.  At our Monday morning assembly, David Westlake announced the winners for 2016.  Grade 1P and 4K won the award this year and thanks to Bunnings Fountain Gate for generously donating plants for each child to take home and plant in their garden.  Have a look at the great creations!
