What a wonderful afternoon we had planting the $2000 worth of plants that Warner’s Nursery have very kindly given to our school when we received the Victorian Schools Garden Award Grant earlier in the year.  We were thrilled to see such a beautiful variety of ground covers, shrubs and some established trees.  Our 90 grade 5 students all had the opportunity to plant a plant each within the new Outdoor Common Room garden space.  With the assistance of Ian, Andrew and Bonnie from Warner’s, the plants were placed and the planting began.  Thank you to Warner’s for supplying us with such beautiful plants!  They look amazing within the garden.  Thank you to Andy, Nicole and Ruby Coupar for assisting with planting.  Thank you to the parents, teachers and staff who also assisted the students to plant the garden.  It looks amazing!  We can’t wait until all the other items are installed including: giant marble run, Jenga, dominoes, blackboard, tee pees, mindfulness spaces and seats.  It is going to be a wonderful transformation of what was a very plain area.

Thank you to Matt and Jarrod McCrum for building two recycled pallet seats for our students to use within the new garden space.  Thank you to Andy Coupar for building a giant marble run which has been constructed with PVC plumbers pipe.  Thank you to Nicole and Ruby Coupar and some of the Art club students for painting both the pallet seats and marble run. We also now have outdoor naughts and crosses for the students to enjoy!

They are going to be wonderful within the garden!

Welcome back to the 2017 school year.  Our new Sensory Garden is taking shape with the  layout almost completed.  We look forward to the students being able to explore the garden in the coming weeks.  The Sensory Garden is built from many recycled materials and all students had the opportunity to ‘adopt a plant’ which they planted within the garden towards the end of 2016.  The Sensory Garden will have plants and materials within the environment which engage the 5 senses including: seeing different plants, colours and movement, hearing different sounds as leaves rustle, plants move and musical instruments chime, touching different textures in the built area which range from smooth to rough, prickly to soft, smelling different scents given off by plants, leaves, soil and water and eventually tasting different native plants.  The garden has been generously supported by the RACV, City of Casey, Coates Hire and the Berwick Lodge Primary School community. Andy Coupar from Eskape Landscapes has designed the layout and constructed the garden utilising the natural fall to create a dry creek bed, jetty, arbour, checker board,  seating and outdoor classroom space. We look forward to seeing the garden evolve as artworks are installed and the students make items to be included in the garden.  Thank you to the fantastic staff who have assisted at working bees and to parents who have donated items and supported the project.

What a wonderful day we had getting ready for our big Twilight Garden Opening night celebration.  The morning started early with a delivery of granitic sand and rocks to top up our paths and dry creek bed.  Andy Coupar our landscaper and wife Nicole were very busy all morning getting things ready.  The excitement was building as we had a steady stream of grades coming to visit the garden and place their class scarecrow into the garden in anticipation of being chosen as the winner.  Trish Luke came down with a few helpers from her class to complete the drawings on the chalkboards and they looked magnificent!  We had a few parents stay and assist, thanks to Toni Sier and Sharon Smiley, your help was greatly appreciated.  Thank you to all of the parents who have helped in many ways within the garden. We weeded, tidied, swept, planted, placed scarecrows and by 2pm our garden was looking amazing. The excitement was building around school as the eager students couldn’t wait until the end of the day to have a look.  We had the official photographer come and take photos at 4pm and the light in the garden was beautiful.  From then on, it was a continuous stream of families turning up in readiness for our opening.  A big thank you to the wonderful staff at BLPS who helped in various ways from cooking sausages on the BBQ, collecting Scarecrows, Setting up Games, organising the choir and Chinese songs, organising the Art Show or assisting in many other ways we are truly lucky to have such dedicated staff who helped to create a wonderful atmosphere at our school.  At 5.45pm Mick Morland, the Mayor for the City of Casey, officially openend our garden with an unveiling of a plaque and cutting of a ribbon.  Our School Captains, Ruby and Kav spoke confidently and represented our school with pride.  The garden opening was a celebration of the achievements of a hard working staff, parents, students and members of our community who assisted in many ways throughout the year to see the project through.  Our school now has a wonderful outdoor learning space that provides different learning opportunities for our students.  Congratulations Berwick Lodge PS on a fantastic team effort!  Visit our BLOG again very soon to see more photos from the night!

Today we placed mulch in the boxes, planted plants and our first scare crow was placed into a grade box.  Thank you to Neil Davis, a Dad at BLPS who has made a beautiful seat from reclaimed redgum and installed this today.  Thanks to Ned Culibrk and Sharon Smiley for helping as well.  The seat is placed in the garden in memory of Jennie Tranter and offers a place to sit and reflect and enjoy the garden.  Thanks also to Bruce Cusack for fixing our opening plaques in place. Our whole school is excited about the opening and we are all looking forward to enjoying a picnic with our families, listening to the Choir, looking at beautiful art work, playing games, eating sausages and celebrating in the garden.

A big thank you to Chris Ward (Dad to Ally and Tiah) who has just delivered a double lift up seat which he has made for our garden. This will be a seat and also double as storage for tools and gloves.  He has also made us two more stools to be placed in the garden.  Look at Tiah sitting on the seat!  They look amazing!

We have been very lucky to have Chris Ward, (dad to Tiah and Ally) make us two hardwood timber bridges to span the dry creek bed and two special bench seats.  They look amazing and we can’t wait until they are installed in the garden!  Thanks Chris and girls for making them for us.
