What a wonderful afternoon we had planting the $2000 worth of plants that Warner’s Nursery have very kindly given to our school when we received the Victorian Schools Garden Award Grant earlier in the year.  We were thrilled to see such a beautiful variety of ground covers, shrubs and some established trees.  Our 90 grade 5 students all had the opportunity to plant a plant each within the new Outdoor Common Room garden space.  With the assistance of Ian, Andrew and Bonnie from Warner’s, the plants were placed and the planting began.  Thank you to Warner’s for supplying us with such beautiful plants!  They look amazing within the garden.  Thank you to Andy, Nicole and Ruby Coupar for assisting with planting.  Thank you to the parents, teachers and staff who also assisted the students to plant the garden.  It looks amazing!  We can’t wait until all the other items are installed including: giant marble run, Jenga, dominoes, blackboard, tee pees, mindfulness spaces and seats.  It is going to be a wonderful transformation of what was a very plain area.

Congratulations Berwick Lodge for receiving a Junior Landcare Biodiversity Grant!  This will assist with completing the final part of the Sensory Garden including the dinosaur dig and interpretive signage to educate our students and community.  Without the grants, we wouldn’t have the fantastic garden spaces we have today!  Thankyou to Junior Landcare for supporting our project!

Our beautiful Sensory Garden is certainly a wonderful space to explore and enjoy.  All our plants are growing and we have a fantastic area to learn, play and discover with nature.  Can you remember what it looked like as the garden was built?

Our grade 5 students have been very busy planning, drawing and designing our new outdoor common room garden space which will be built between the grade 5 classrooms and the new grade 4 double portable.  The students have some amazing ideas including seating, mindfulness areas, reading corners, games, chalkboard, marble run, vertical gardens and working spaces for learning.  We wish to thank Warner’s nursery for their garden grant which will assist us with the required plants for the new space.  Warner’s are currently working with Mrs. McCrum to finalise the project design and then it will begin! Warner’s are a wholesale nursery but plants can be purchased from retail outlets.  Please view Warner’s web address for further information:  https://warners.com.au/index.html

The students will be involved in planting and building different parts of the new space. These are some of the fantastic designs for the new space!

We were thrilled to have received two garden grants so far this year.  We have received a City of Casey environmental grant and also the Victorian School Garden Awards grant from Warner’s nursery.  The City of Casey grant will assist with completing the final stage of the Sensory Garden and the Warner’s nursery grant will enable us to build a common room/outdoor classroom space near the grade 5/6 building.  The final stage of the Sensory garden will include a dinosaur discovery area and has recently been planted with plants on Planet Ark Day.  The grade 5 students have been designing the outdoor common room space and have some amazing ideas.  These are the two before photos for the spaces to be developed:

Welcome back to the 2017 school year.  Our new Sensory Garden is taking shape with the  layout almost completed.  We look forward to the students being able to explore the garden in the coming weeks.  The Sensory Garden is built from many recycled materials and all students had the opportunity to ‘adopt a plant’ which they planted within the garden towards the end of 2016.  The Sensory Garden will have plants and materials within the environment which engage the 5 senses including: seeing different plants, colours and movement, hearing different sounds as leaves rustle, plants move and musical instruments chime, touching different textures in the built area which range from smooth to rough, prickly to soft, smelling different scents given off by plants, leaves, soil and water and eventually tasting different native plants.  The garden has been generously supported by the RACV, City of Casey, Coates Hire and the Berwick Lodge Primary School community. Andy Coupar from Eskape Landscapes has designed the layout and constructed the garden utilising the natural fall to create a dry creek bed, jetty, arbour, checker board,  seating and outdoor classroom space. We look forward to seeing the garden evolve as artworks are installed and the students make items to be included in the garden.  Thank you to the fantastic staff who have assisted at working bees and to parents who have donated items and supported the project.

This year we have started building our new Sensory Garden.  This is a garden that will stimulate and calm the senses through seeing, touching, smelling, hearing and tasting.  We started the first stage of the garden after receiving a grant from the City of Casey and the RACV.  With volunteer help from staff and parents we began the first part of removing the soil to develop the layout.  Andy Coupar from Eskape landscapes designed the garden and Ryan Johnston from Coates hire generously donated the earth moving equipment to begin the garden.  The children all had the opportunity to adopt a plant and we have planted over 700 indigenous plants into the garden.  We look forward to seeing the next stage of the garden completed.

Berwick Lodge Primary School Memorial Garden

This year we have constructed a very special Memorial Garden which has been the focal point during both our ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day services.  The Memorial garden was constructed through the generosity of a few dads – Brett Fritzlaff, Luke MacKenzie who paved the area and we wish to also thank Phoenix stone for supporting the project.  Both Brett and Luke gave up quite a few weekends and time after school to complete the project.  Andy Coupar prepared the area, poured the slab and constructed the garden, seats and ANZAC feature.  Ryan Johnston provided the Dingo digger from Coates Hire. We thank them all for their assistance.  The project was completed with the assistance of an ANZAC Centenary Grant from the State Government.  The official opening of the garden was by Judith Graley MP and also attended by representatives from the Berwick RSL.  The RSL very generously supported the project by donating the conflict signs and also the sign to inform the community about the significance of the area as a soldier settlement after the war.  Other signage includes information about William Donovan Joynt who received the Victorian Cross and resided within Berwick.  The Memorial Garden is a beautiful space for all to reflect and remember those who have served.

A BIG THANKYOU to our school community who voted for our new Sensory Garden project in the ‘Back to Earth’ grant funding submission.  We had a fantastic response from our school community and thanks to everyone that voted, we are now in the top 16 finalists, which means we are in with a chance to win $5000 to start our new project.  This is a great achievement! We will find out early in June if we are the successful Primary School!
